*sigh*

So, just as i was beginning to see a bright side to the internet changing the music industry, a huge setback: I fell victim to piracy and a mild form of identity theft. Someone hacked me, and stole two of my original songs and claimed them to be their own works and posted them on their myspace music account. Upon researching more on this kid, it turns out he has stolen from ten artists over the past two or three years. So a big big big negative effect the internet has had on the music industry is how easily theft can take place. Next week I will be conferencing with Peter Spellmen from Berklee about the Internet's Effect on the Music Industry, and I am very interested in hearing what his view on it is.

wowzers

today i stumbled upon this wonderful website (link below) which shed some light onto my inquiry of the positive effects the internet has on the music industry and it provided a breakdown of that, complete with charts and links and everything!
Some points it highlights are that while only mainstream, big label bands find success and popularity on the television or radio, the internet provides a means by which smaller bands can distribute their music at low or no cost. This is a hugeeeeeeee point which I overlooked in forming my initial opinion.
cant wait to find more.

hmmmmmmm

In the process of researching for this independent study, it has occurred to me that despite the common belief is that the internet is killing the music industry, there is potentially a plethora of positive effects to result from new technologies and networking possibilities. Basically, that which is believed to be destroying the music industry could potentially be simply reshaping it. I look forward to finding more about the truth behind this potential situation.

I'm starting an independent study on the Internets effect on the music industry.
